Le premier CRM en aviation naît à la NASA (Nasa Ames Center) au début des années 70 dans une petite équipe dirigée par Charles Billings avec deux autres contributeurs essentiels : Earl Weiner et Bob Helmreich, et trois thésards John Lauber, Davig Nagel, et Clayton Foushee. Le concept sera vendu pour la première fois à United Air-Lines en 1977. Il deviendra obligatoire en Aviation civile en France en 1993, et en Europe en 1999.
Le premier transfert de CRM au monde médical pour anesthésistes et bloc est probablement Suisse, à l’université de médecine de Bale dans les années 96-97, directement inspiré du travail de Bob Helmreich de l’université du Texas (venu en sabbatique 6 mois à Bale Zurich en 1995)
Les publications vont rester très marginales sur le sujet jusqu’au tournant des années 2003-2004
